The apartment is located in the residential complex "Donskoy Olympus" on Serpukhovskaya Val Street. From the windows of the kitchen, living room and master bedroom you can see the Shukhov TV tower, as well as the Khavsko-Shabolovsky housing estate. It was designed and built in the late 1920s by the founder of ASNOVA (Association of New Architects) Nikolai Ladovsky with the participation of Bauhaus professor Hinnerk Scheper. It was the first constructivist quarter in the Soviet Union.

The clients are a young couple with two children. The husband is a former athlete, developing his own business. His wife is a theater critic. "From the first meeting, "modern classics" appeared in the wishes. But later, as we worked on the layout, trust in us grew and our proposals to dilute the interior with modern, atypical items for the classics were approved," says Maksim Novinkov.
The advantages of the original layout are large volumes. "Recently, even multi-room apartments are being designed quite cramped: the bedroom literally stretches' ' onto the bed, leaving very small passages on the sides," says the architect. And in this project there is much more air and light. However, the load-bearing pylons were rather inconveniently located. They either strictly zoned the premises, or they would have to be completely ergonomically bypassed.

And in the very center of the plan, a dark hall was obtained, into which it was not possible to let in light, based on the terms of reference and the chosen style. But, in an attempt to shorten this hall, we managed to make an additional dressing room in the master bedroom. In general, the layout had to tinker. The changes affected mainly the internal utility rooms: in addition to the additional dressing room mentioned above, a laundry room appeared, the master bathroom was optimized taking into account the requirement to leave only a shower.»
«In this project, I wanted to make "non-classical classics," — Maksim Novinkov says. Surfaces, finishes or elements that are not typical of the overall style appear in each room: LED directional light, unusual floors, a wall in the kitchen finished with porcelain stoneware, a kitchen with smooth facades without handles.

The yellow Dutch vintage Mobeledom armchair, the green armchair of the Danish brand Muuto, bought from the L'appartement concept store, were well received by the customers. They also bought a floor lamp and a Zuiver coffee table, a Linie Design carpet, ceramic accessories, glass accessories - Scandinavian vintage RetroNord. The blue chairs, as well as the pouf and stool in the bedroom, were made by Loffilab. These items are well diluted with their shapes, textures and colors of a fairly traditional shell.
Maksim admits that the project was not easy: it involved contractors not from his team, and sometimes it was not easy to understand them. As a result, after agreeing on the basic concept, it was necessary to constantly make changes. "Moldings and cornices, built-in furniture really don't like small edits - the existing interior system goes astray, and it has to be "reassembled". Such tasks had to be solved all the time in the process of architectural supervision.

There is quite a lot of blue in the project. Maksim Novinkov says that he likes to use blue with warm walls characteristic of the classic style. "It refreshes, allows the whole interior to play. We have blue in the guest bathroom, and on the floor in the hall, and on the wall behind the kitchen, as well as in pieces of furniture.»
Porcelain stoneware and parquet are the key materials, as Maksim says, the "stars" of this project. The wall behind the kitchen is completely lined with sheets from the Ava Ceramica factory. "I'm not a fan of kitchen aprons at all, I often decorate the wall completely." In the bedroom, a stone panel in gray-beige tones was pasted on the wall to separate the delicate pink-beige shade of the curtains from the rather cold color of the walls. "In bedrooms, you don't usually see stone surfaces, it is considered to be a cold material, but I think that it can be very out of place." The floor in the lobby is paved with porcelain stoneware with an accentuated chaotic linear pattern, which contrasts with the traditional layouts on the walls.

"The important thing for me is that in this project I managed to withstand a certain line: I didn't go out of the given framework of a rather traditional style, but I managed to build in elements that make it stand out from the general mass of modern classics," Maksim Novinkov sums up.
Herringbone parquet is laid throughout the apartment. It turned out to be a funny episode. By the time they chose the parquet, there were already several cases when I dissuaded them from some of the positions they had already chosen, suggesting the best ones. And so, I was bringing to the meeting samples of the board that I wanted to offer them. On the way, we phoned, and they said that they accidentally found a perfectly perfect parquet, and they were taking it to a meeting. "You will definitely accept it," they said. And for sure, the board turned out to be even better than the one that I wanted to offer, which I immediately reported.
